On YouTube today I found this video. Basically someone who hates tattoos.. and is obviously dense in the subject of tattoos -knows absolutely nothing about the artwork. It really kind of made me laugh but at the same time, feel sorry for this man. He really is in the dark about tattoos and their meaning.
And honestly... telling people to go get drunk instead... wow.
Stereotypes Associated with Tattoos:
-Troublemaker; if you have a tattoo, you have an edge to you -you might be a troublemaker or a some kind of weird outlaw. *[yes.. this is why thousands of doctors, lawyers, policemen and upstanding businessmen have tattoos as well.. not to mention the millions of 'family oriented' moms and dads]
-Fad; tattoos are a fad and will eventually be out of style. *[Wrong. The art of tattooing has been dated back to over 5,000 years ago. Its not something that will go away. If anything, its going to flourish and grow]
-Certain subcultures; just because you have a tattoo, that automatically means you are: punk rock, goth, in a gang or a biker. *[Again..look around at people who have tattoos. They are pretty 'normal' every day people in most eyes.]
-Disease and Isolation; "Scholarly literature, particularly from psychology, medicine, and corrections, has often associated tattooing with unconventional, unhealthy, unwanted people" (Forbes, 2001). *[I'm not even going to get into this one. I will let you take it as you will]
-Being incapable of work; normally if you have a visible tattoo and you apply for a job, have an interview.. you will not get this job. You are not a serious person. *[Ive had trouble with this actually, seeing as I have one on my wrist, in plain sight. News Flash! If you do not hire someone BECAUSE of their tattoo(s).. that is called discrimination. And that my friends is against the law. Having a tattoo doesn't mean that you are not a serious person, it doesn't mean you are stupid and incapable of working under someone. And usually, customers love seeing tattoos on people nowadays. It makes that person relatable and real.]

this is how uch i actually l loved this blog...i went an created an account just so i could comment.
well done chickie. your cynical realism is just what this world needs.
this blog itself is a work of art and infact im disgusted that im the first to commend you for it.
my hat definately goes off to you. im standing right behind you on the subjec matter.
tattoos = art immortalised
cobie
LOL WOW his guy is really ignorant. I am an EMT and I have 2 tattoos; one on each forearm, my patients LOVE them. One is playboy bunny that says "pure innocence" under it...yes i did this on PURPOSE, the other is a double heart with a banner with my initials inside. I am a professional and I wear my tattoos with pride & No person will EVER make me ashamed of them. I will be a Probation Officer when I am done with college and I will not hide them then either. I found this site looking for the stereotypes of people with tattoos. I am doing my thesis on tattoos.
hey girlfriend,
i'm doing some research for a radio documentary that i'm going to be putting together on tattoos and the art of tattooing and i came across your blog and of course, ended up watching the youtube video.
i only have one thing to say about the pumpkin: alcoholic. telling millions of people to go and drink is quite shameful and i have nothing more to say.
to you:
props for standing up and saying something about this! i have many tattoos and of course they all mean something, but my brothers and friends have sleeves of tattoos with beautiful ART. some of their tattoos don't mean a single thing to them, other than the simple fact that it is a beautiful piece of artwork.
it's unfortunate that people are blind to this.
i used to work for a clothing store called Forever XXI. They had a rule that if your tattoo was bigger than a quarter, you had to cover it up. Well clearly, this was a problem for me. I would always be told "go put on a sweater" or "please take your hair out of that ponytail."
okay, let me ask you this: if i had 100 tattoos that were all smaller than a quarter, would that be okay?
needless to say, i quit working there because people were trying to tell me what to look like and that's just not cool.
once again, wicked job on the blog post.
tattoos are remarkable art work and the artists behind them are completely brilliant.
keep it real, girl
